Right beside the Great Buddha of Takaoka, something new has arrived at amidacoffee. We’re calling it the Rahotsu Soft Serve.

◆ So what exactly is a “rahotsu”?

Look up at the Great Buddha’s head and you’ll see rows of small, tightly curled bumps. Not a hat. Not a perm. That’s hair.

The word rahotsu (螺髪) begins with the character for spiral seashell. Each curl coils like a shell, and every one of them turns clockwise. It’s counted among the thirty-two marks of a Buddha — a list of physical characteristics described in the sutras — and it belongs only to figures who have reached enlightenment. Bodhisattvas don’t have it. The gentle dome on top of the head has its own name, nikkei; the small white dot between the brows is the byakugō. Every detail carries meaning.

As for where the curls came from: one tradition says that during his years of ascetic practice, the Buddha’s hair simply grew long and curled in on itself. All that walking, all that thinking, all that praying — set into shape and left there. Once you know that, the bumps start to look different.

The style traveled, too. Early statues in Gandhara had wavy hair; the spiral form emerged in Mathura, in India, and eventually made its way across the sea to Japan. The sutras describe the hair as shining a deep lapis blue, which is why many statues are painted in ultramarine.

And here’s the part that surprised us most. The Great Buddha of Takaoka has 648 individual curls. Each one is nine centimeters across. The seated figure stands 7.43 meters tall, or 15.85 meters counting the halo behind him. Two earlier wooden statues burned in city fires; this bronze one was completed in 1933, thirty-three years after the last fire, funded by donations from ordinary townspeople and cast using Takaoka’s centuries-old metalworking craft. He’s often called the most handsome Great Buddha in Japan. Locals just call him Daibuttsan.

Six hundred and forty-eight curls, each shaped by a craftsman’s hands. We look up at him every morning, and it does something to your posture.

◆ About that spiral

One day it occurred to us: the swirl on top of a soft serve cone is a spiral too. Curling around and around, just like a rahotsu.

If we were going to sell a spiral, we wanted one that could only exist here. That’s how this started.

Admittedly, our cone has maybe five or six turns. Nowhere near 648. But you can hold the same shape in your hand, under the same sky, a few steps from the original. That felt like enough.

◆ Three flavors

Rich Vanilla — Straight-ahead milk, dense and creamy, melting clean off the tongue with a lighter finish than you’d expect. The classic.

House-Roasted Coffee — Made with beans we roast ourselves. The aroma hits first, then a long, pleasantly bitter finish. This is the one only a coffee shop could make.

Swirl — For anyone who can’t choose. Sweet milk and bitter coffee take turns with every bite. Honestly, this might be the right answer.

◆ A rest after your visit

We run a shop directly beside the Great Buddha.

People come to press their palms together in prayer. People wander by on a walk. People pull over for a break from driving. Some are just passing through town on the way to somewhere else.

The Great Buddha is simply there, receiving all of them without a word. He answers nothing, and yet something settles in you when you look up at him.

So the job of a small shop at his feet seems clear enough: to tell people well done, you made it here, and hand them somewhere to sit. To stretch out that quiet a little longer, so it can go home with them. That’s what we think we’re here for.

If something cold and sweet can sit quietly alongside that moment, we’d be glad.

◆ Recharge, for summer

It’s been hot. The kind of heat where your appetite disappears and nothing quite goes down. Some days you can’t even face a proper meal.

Which is exactly when something cold and sweet does its work. That first spoonful sinking in, and a bit of energy quietly returning. Summer fatigue often responds better to this than to anything sensible.

新ブッダスイーツ登場！その名も「螺髪ソフトクリーム」🍦

高岡大仏さまの、すぐお隣。 amidacoffeeに新しい仲間が加わりました。その名も「螺髪（らほつ）ソフトクリーム」です。

◆ 螺髪（らほつ）って、なに？

大仏さまの頭にある、あのつぶつぶ。 パンチパーマでも帽子でもなく、あれはれっきとした「髪の毛」なんです。

「螺髪」の”螺”は、巻き貝のこと。 一つひとつが貝のようにくるりと渦を巻き、すべて右まわりに巻かれています。仏さまの理想の姿を説いた「三十二相八十種好（さんじゅうにそうはちじっしゅごう）」という三十二の特徴のひとつに数えられていて、悟りを開かれた”如来”だけに許された髪型なのだそう。菩薩さまや明王さまに螺髪はありません。頭頂のこんもりした盛り上がりは「肉髻（にっけい）」、眉間の白い点は「白毫（びゃくごう）」。ひとつひとつに意味があります。

由来は、お釈迦さまが修行に励むうちに伸びた髪が、自然と縮れて丸まった姿だとも伝えられています。ずっと歩き、ずっと考え、ずっと祈り続けた時間が、そのまま形になったもの。そう思うと、あのつぶつぶが少し違って見えてきませんか。

もともとガンダーラの仏像は波打つ髪でしたが、インド・マトゥラーで渦巻き状の表現が生まれ、それが海を渡って日本へ。経典には髪が青瑠璃色に輝くとあり、群青で彩色される仏像も多いのだそうです。

そして驚くのが、高岡大仏さまの螺髪の数。 なんと648個。ひとつの直径は9cm。 坐像の高さは7m43cm、円光背まで含めた全体で15m85cm。二度の大火で焼失しながら、高岡の鋳物の技と市民の方々の願いが結集し、33年の時を経て昭和8年に開眼を迎えたお姿です。「日本一の美男」と称され、地元では「だいぶっつぁん」と親しまれています。

648個の渦のひとつひとつに、職人の手が入っている。 毎朝あの背中を見上げるたび、そのことを思って自然と背筋が伸びます。

◆ ソフトクリームの、あの渦

ある日、ふと気づきました。 ソフトクリームのあの美しい渦巻きも、くるりと巻いた螺旋のかたち。 大仏さまの螺髪と、どこか似ている——。

同じ渦なら、この場所でしか出せない一本にしたい。 そこから生まれたのが、この「螺髪ソフトクリーム」です。

ちなみに、コーンの上でくるくると重なる渦は数えるほどしかありません。648個には遠くおよびません。それでも、大仏さまと同じかたちを手のひらに乗せて、同じ空の下で味わっていただける。そんな一本になったらいいなと思っています。

◆ フレーバーは3種類

◆ 参拝のあとの、ひとやすみを

私たちは、大仏さまの真横でお店を開いています。

手を合わせに来られた方。散策の途中で通りかかった方。ドライブの休憩に立ち寄られた方。旅の途中、この街をたまたま通り過ぎるだけの方。

大仏さまは、いつもそこにいて、ただ静かに迎えてくださいます。願いを聞いても、何もおっしゃらない。それでも、見上げるとなぜか気持ちがすっと整う。そういう存在です。

だとしたら、その足元にいる私たちにできるのは、お参りを終えた方に「おつかれさまでした」とひと息つける場所を差し出すこと。大仏さまがくださった静かな時間を、もう少しだけ延ばしてお持ち帰りいただくこと。それが、この場所でお店をやらせていただいている私たちの役目だと思っています。

手を合わせたあとの、ほっとしたあの時間に。 冷たいひとくちがそっと寄り添えたら、こんなに嬉しいことはありません。

◆ 夏のエナジーチャージに

暑い日が続きますね。 食欲が落ちて、なんとなく喉を通りづらい。ごはんを食べる気力すら出ない。そんな季節です。

そんなときこそ、甘くて、冷たくて、おいしいもの。 ひんやりしたひとくちが、すっと体にしみこんでいく感覚。ちょっとだけ元気が戻ってくる、あの感じ。夏の疲れには、案外こういうものがいちばん効いたりします。
